Get To Know: New Genesis

Memphis is the most underrated when it comes to the showcasing of our talent. We have it oozing so out of our ears we can’t contain it. If you don’t believe me, then hopefully this band will convince you of our shining capabilities. Born and raised right here in Memphis, New Genesis is definitely blazing a trail. Currently touring with acts like Chrisette Michele and the legendary Stevie Wonder is only an eye glance of their resume right now. These guys are hard at work on a new project slated for release next month. With pride I feature our next artists, Get To Know: New Genesis.

For those who aren’t too familiar with you, tell us a little bit about how New Genesis was formed?

New Genesis is basically a group of five musicians turn artist. We were formed in Memphis, TN where we grew up as friends before we began to advertise ourselves as a band.

Your sound is described as Rock/Pop/Contemporary. How would you guys “label” your sound?

Well, it’s a rare combination of R&B/Pop. Rare because it still contains other forms of styles such as rock and alternative but over an urban beat and soulful pop vocals.

Since the big moves to L.A. a few years back, you guys have been super busy…what are some of the latest projects you’ve been a part of or artists you’ve worked with?

Busy is an understatement. But to name a few, in three years we have been blessed to work with artist such as Stevie Wonder, Jessica Simpson, Chris Cornell, Smokey Robinson, Keyshia Cole, Three Six Mafia, and Chrisette Michele among others.

With all the separate touring you guys do, how is it when you guys get back together in the studio?

Its magic all over again, We’re like family to each other so when we are able to be all in one place we make our beds at the studio and work, laugh, and enjoy each others’ company.

What’s the title of your new project? When will it be released?
Currently we are working on a mixtape, which isn’t titled yet. Everything will be free of charge to anyone interested. We plan to hit the internet scene as hard as possible in order to get our music out. We are looking for the official release to be in August.

How is this project different from your first album?
Well our last project was released in 2005, so in five years a lot has changed from our musicianship all the way to our personal lives. And we believe that our music will definitely reflect our growth.

Can we expect you guys to tour together soon?
Well in ’09 and ’10 we toured heavily with Chrisette Michele as a band, so at this point, yes. We definitely plan to be touring with her as musicians. As artists, we are still waiting on that opportunity.

What do you miss most about home?
Oh my goodness! Everything. We love Memphis. Food, family, and friends. And of course the music. Got to love it!

What’s in the future for New Genesis?
Look for tons of new music. We aren’t necessarily looking to come out with album after album. At this point we are into just releasing songs and singles. We don’t belong to any company at the moment so we are going to take advantage while we can to experiment with that strategy and lay our own groundwork for the future. Also we are spreading our wings to songwriting, producing, and television and film music. Now that we are in LA, those opportunities are more in arms reach.
