What's in a Name?
From the time I was a teenager until now, I have never really been impressed by people’s names. It took me several years to own, rather like my birth name. I hated my name. Tameka is such a common name (in certain communities) and it seemed that there was always another classmate, friend, or foe in close proximity whose name was also Tameka (usually spelled different, but pronounced the same).
My name never really spoke to who I was as a person. It never “said” anything to/about me, but I knew/know that I was/am an exceptional individual. I guess you can say by having such a common name (in my community), I had little respect for the weight of a person’s name. Just as my name didn’t define who I was; I knew the same had to be true for everyone else…Even if your name has a literal meaning, if it is given to you by someone else then that’s their vision, or hope for you. It’s not yours.
I write all of that to say…I am not impressed when people drop the names, or titles of others that they may know. Actions, on the other hand, are worthy of attention. People drop names a lot. I hold people in high or low regard based on their ability to do what they are supposed to be doing. I don’t care if you are the best basketball player and we are playing volleyball. It means nothing to me if you are a superb typist, but the occasion calls for a public speaker. There is no value-added if your father used to be the head of anything under the sun, because that doesn’t speak to your ability to accomplish the same. Usually when a person drops a name, it’s because they aren’t able to carry the weight of their position/circumstance. Think about it…If Microsoft hires a new CEO and that person proves to be incompetent, then being the CEO of Microsoft means nothing (aside from the salary that person may have received up unto that point <<
