SYcodelic Sy Smith: Review by Marvina S.
The Sybersocially Sy Smith is back with a new album that is getting rave reviews. SoulTracks.com has put this CD on spotlight as the CD of the month to get. The new album titled "Conflict" was released April 15th 2008 (Psyko! Records). The former Go-Go singer and Brand New Heavies front woman came back better than I expected her to. The self titled track Conflict is oh so Sy. It’s very funky, laid back and getting her message of psychological politics across in her lyrics "This is crazy/this is sane/ this is married/ this is divorce/ this will be settled in court./ This is sober/ This drunk/ This is funky like a skunk/ … This is your brain on drugs." Unlike her last three CD's this has to be her best to date.
To be honest, I have listened to this entire CD but you know how it goes, there are certain tracks that continue to pull you to them. Conflict is one of those tracks. The next track I enjoyed was Overthought which I called a "Sycodelic" love song which any fan of Ms. Smith would really appreciate. The duet was done with Bilal Salaam.
Reach down in your soul is sort of an out of the box track, but Sy being Sy Smith, that is her aim. She worked with an artist by the name of Wes Felton. This song is about a couple and she is exposing her own insecurities and doubts. It is a very catchy song.
What I did notice in her song Spies is how she gets more edgy and metaphoric just like another track on this CD titled B Side Love Affair. Ms. Smith has delivered a very tight 11 track CD. Overall, I give it 2 thumbs up and a big toe. Just don't take my ears for it. You can purchase this CD as well as her other three releases Psykosoul, Syberspace Social, and Live from the Temple at www.sysmith.com and www.amazon.com .
